An Iconic Location: How to Make it Modern | Rangefinder

When in San Francisco taking wedding portraits, you definitely want to include at least one Golden Gate Bridge shot, right? But how do you turn an iconic location into a unique photo op? Matt Lim found a way with this newlywed portrait of couple Wes and Nora.

“I was drawn to the iconic location because of the view of the Golden Gate Bridge, of course,” says Lim, “but also the concrete Battery Godfrey structures in the surrounding area, which have a lot of nooks and crannies to shoot in.”

Lim continues: “The Golden Gate Bridge is simply classic, which was what I was initially wanting, but the posing tourists, for me, are what really make the image. They inject a sense of humor and real life into an idyllic setting. Thus the contrast of the serene and the quirky really drew me in.”

With tourists everywhere and just a few minutes to shoot, Lim adds, there was no avoiding them. “Instead, we embraced it and it made for a beautiful shot that makes me smile every time I think about it.”

(Photographed with a Nikon D750 and Sigma 24mm Art lens, at f/2, 1/500 of a sec. and ISO 200.)
