In Mexico’s north-central state of Zacatecas, José Pablo Villareal was photographing a bride in the Museo Rafael Coronel, a former Franciscan convent that was built in the 17th century. “We were inside of what used to be the church, although it has been restored—the ceiling was completely destroyed and renewed with a plastic translucent ceiling that gave us an even light,” Villareal explains.

It was a cloudy day, but still the light poked through the clouds. And when it did, Villareal was ready. “In this precise moment, a ray of harsh light entered through one of the church’s windows and hit the sidewall at the right height for Marcela to stand in,” he says. “I quickly exposed to the light and made my composition.”

Villareal wanted to include as much of the scene as possible, but limited by this one spot of light, he shot a few closeup portraits before walking back to include some of the site’s architecture as well. “Then,” he says, “the light disappeared.”

(Shot with a Nikon D750 and Rokinon Tilt-Shift 24mm f/3.5 lens at f/3.5, 1/640 sec. and ISO 160.)
